Anushka Sharma was born to an army based family in Bangalore. Her father is a highly ranked Army Officer and her mother is a housewife. She has one elder brother who was a state-level cricketer and is now in the Merchant Navy. She studied in Army School and then excelled to achieve a graduation specialized in arts from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. Right from a young age, Sharma wished to make it big in the glamor world. She was once quoted as saying "I can't see myself doing anything else." With moral support from her parents, a confident Anushka enrolled in the Elite Modeling Agency. She was groomed by renowned style consultant Prasad Bidapa, whom she met when she was just 15 years of age. Bidapa admits that Anushka always had the quality to be a star.
She was the find of internationally acclaimed Goan fashion designer Wendell Rodricks. He spotted her while she was moving around in a clothes showroom in Bangalore. Their chance meeting resulted in her moving to Mumbai. She began her modeling career at the Lakme Fashion Week and was a show-stopper at Wendell Rodricks Les Vamps Show. Within a year she became a sensational model in India, and was picked to be Wendell Rodricks's finale model at the Spring Summer '07 Collection. Since then the demure looking model has done campaigns for Silk & Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry and Fiat Palio.
Through the Elite Modeling Agency, her pictures reached the casting directors of Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and she was called in for an audition. After a few more auditions, she was officially cast for the female lead, Taani. On her portrayal of this character in her debut film, Anushka has been described by viewers as delivering a confident performance likened to that of a veteran actress and standing out even against her co-star, Shahrukh Khan.
She has stated that she currently has a contract to do two more movies with Yash Raj Films but is free to do films outside YRF to further her career if she wishes.

Anushka Sharma not upset by rumours
“There are actors like Rani (Mukerji), Vidya (Balan) that I really look up to. I think there’s a long way for me to go. And I’m not even thinking about it,” says the actress.
"I don’t have any set of goals. I never did and I don’t think I ever will,” she says. For someone who’d never dreamt of being an actor, Sharma has a pretty impressive repertoire to boast of, but refuses to take the credit for any of her hits so far. Having already worked with the likes of actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar, she says that she considers herself ‘just plain lucky’.
“God’s already given me so much even without having asked for it. I don’t want to get greedy and spoil my equation with ‘Him’,” she smiles, explaining why she doesn’t have a wish-list yet. “When I pray, I don’t ask for anything, I just thank,” she adds.
Known for her bindaas ways, Sharma admits that playing a fiery character comes easy to her, but says that being a demure, shy girl on screen is just as easy. “I think personally, I relate to Taani (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) as much as I did to Simran (Patiala House). So, I don’t put any boundaries for myself when it comes to roles or choosing films.”
The same applies to exposing on screen too? “I’ve been a ramp model, so wearing the tiniest bit of clothes is not a problem for me. Being a model, I know I can carry them off, but I don’t want to do it, if not required. I don’t believe in un-required exposure,” she maintains.
Sharma may be making news for her professional life, but her personal life’s as much in news too. But she’s unperturbed.
“As long as my parents know the truth and trust me, rumours don’t upset me,” she says referring to her link-up with co-star Ranveer Singh with whom she is paired once again in Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl. She may not admit to her relationship with him, but she doesn’t deny it either.
“Whether people let my personal life remain personal or not, I will not let go of my privacy,” she asserts

Ranveer Singh: Anushka and I are very good friends
The newcomer in Bollywood Ranveer Singh recently made his debut in Band Baaja Baaraat opposite Anushka Sharma and confirmed that they both are very good friends. He does not bother about the rumors, which claim that they both are romantically involved. Ranveer told, “She and I are very god friends. How do I change the truth just because it sounds clichéd? Neither of us are affected about what people are saying.”
As for the rumors that are floating in the air these days, he says, “I was too much into my work to even pay attention to the rumors. I just want to perform well and this has been my only concern. In fact, I was casually dating a girl and a call from Yashraj changed my life. So far I have never been in a serious relationship and my career has just started.”
He continued saying, “We come from different schools of filmmaking. I am a trained actor and she has never been to an acting school. As a model she has faced the camera several times and is two films older to me. She is a one-take actor and I believe in a lot of rehearsal, which was the only thing that annoyed Anushka the most. Because her first take was always the best. We had to come to a middle ground before we both could take off. Now, I feel that I was rehearsing more than required because it was my first movie. She is the one who taught me how to be spontaneous. But the fact is we had to be complete loggerheads on screen and this was helped with our constant friction on the sets regarding the approach of acting.”
When asked about his first release Band Baaja Baaraat he says, “I think after this movie I have to do something with a completely contrasting character. Someone who is not opinionated, loud and unsophisticated.”
One call from Yashraj changed my life, “It was completely out of the blue from the casting director Shanu Sharma. I distinctly remember that I was out on a date and that day Shanu kept calling me. I tried to avoid her calls for as long as I could because I had different things on my mind that moment. Imagine if I had not received her call from Yashraj that day for a fling, which had lasted only for ten days! Anyways the next day I went to Yashraj and did two scenes and they gave a call back within three days. Later, Adi Sir told me that he had made up his mind about me immediately.”
There have been rumors that his father had financed the film, he says, “Yes such rumors do hurt me a lot. And such ugly things take away my pleasure of being the first solo hero to be launched by Yashraj. The pride of my family that I made it on my own got blunted, it was like snatching my little achievement from me. I am proud of myself and I believe in destiny so no rumor can even affect me.”

Time and again, Bollywood stars have faced uncomfortable situations and have raised objections when some persistent fans have tried to click their shots despite their protests. This time this unpleasant situation was faced by Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh, the lead cast of ‘Band Baja Baraaat’ when they were in Kingfisher Mumbai-Delhi flight.
Two co-passengers, an IPS officer and another a former Maharashtra cadre IAS officer, clicked some photographs of Anushka in spite of her objections and this led to a heated argument ending up in a scuffle when they reached to terminal. After landing in Delhi, the two passengers were given separate vehicles when they requested the same to the Kingfisher staff to go to the terminal. Ranveer barged into the vehicle and entered into a fight at the airside and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials had to intervene.
When the issue could not be settled, both the parties were brought to Palam Police station. “Anushka didn’t come to the police station and a representative from Kingfisher airline along with Ranveer came to Palam Police station. The other two were also ready to file a counter complaint. Later, both the parties resolved the matter,” said a police officer.
